Tattoo Removal Guide

Permanently remove tattoos virtually pain-free, for all skin types, from dark to light.

Why remove a tattoo?

  • Did you make a rash decision in college?
  • Are you having difficulty finding a job?
  • Is your one true love, no longer your true love?

Tattoos, the art that we choose to permanently place on our bodies for various reasons, may not be so permanent anymore.  With new technology and techniques, tattoos are able to be effectively removed.

About Laser Therapy for Tattoos

Laser therapy is the most effective way to remove a tattoo and it has also been FDA approved for tattoo removal.  Multiple sessions with the laser are required in order to completely remove your unwanted tattoo. The number of sessions for full removal of the tattoo are dependent upon several factors.  These factors include the age of the tattoo, size of the tattoo, coloring of the tattoo, location of the tattoo, natural skin color, tattoo cover-ups, and professional tattoo work.

Key factors in tattoo removal include:

  • Age of the tattoo: Overtime, the density of the ink becomes less and therefore older tattoos are easier to remove. For example, grandpa’s old sailor tattoo is faded as compared to the dark color when the tattoo was first placed.
  • Size: Larger tattoos typically take more time and sessions. A small finger tattoo will be easier to remove than a tattoo that cover the entire back.
  • Color: Darker ink is easier to remove, while lighter ink is more difficult and white ink is unable to be removed, as it is not recognized by lasers.
  • Location:  Since the laser works by breaking down particles of the ink to be removed by the body, the areas of the body with less circulation are going to be more difficult to remove, which includes the hands, feet, and face.  Anything on the torso is usually easier to remove due to higher circulation.
  • Skin Color: For those with lighter skin tones, it is easier to remove tattoos versus those with naturally darker skin.
  • Cover-ups: If you have had a tattoo that has been covered by another tattoo, there will be a lot of ink concentrated in one area, which will require more sessions to remove.
  • Professional Work: If you have had tattoos performed by a professional tattoo artist, the ink is in higher concentrations and more even through the tattoo, making it more difficult to remove than tattoos by an ametuer tattoo artist.

Side effects of tattoo removal include:

Besides the normal symptoms of treatment, there are side effects to undergoing tattoo removal. Some individuals may experience all or none of these symptoms, such as scarring, blistering, increase or decrease in pigment of the skin, swelling, and itching.  Most of these side effects will go away, particularly with appropriate treatment.

Tattoo removal recovery

Each session of laser removal will require a recovery period, usually a minimum of 6 weeks.  This allows for the skin to fully heal before performing another session to ensure that the tattoo will be removed successfully without any side effects, such as open wounds.  In order to heal appropriately, follow all instructions given by your doctor and avoid having sessions too close together.
